Student Mobility Program 2024 to PSU Thailand: Bridging Science and Tradition

From October 2024 to January 2025, two students—Fadilla Nur Rahma (Biology) and Priyo Prasetyo (Physics)—participated in an International Internship Program at the Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Thailand. They primarily conducted laboratory work in different labs: Fadilla researched Marine Microbiology under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pimonsri Mitraparp-Arthorn in the Microbiology Laboratory, while Priyo worked in the Material Physics Laboratory under Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chatchai Putson.

Fadilla’s research focused on utilizing Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae extracts as a sustainable biocontrol agent against pathogenic Vibrio bacteria, which cause vibriosis in shrimp farming. Meanwhile, Priyo investigated the dielectric properties and energy storage performance of thin-film PVDF-HFP/PMMA/GNP nanocomposites. His research aimed to enhance energy storage efficiency and improve durability for use in batteries or supercapacitors, contributing to the reduction of electronic waste. They spent approximately nine hours daily in the lab, which helped them develop strong time management skills.

Beyond their research, Fadilla and Priyo spent much of their time in the library and built friendships with local Thai students. They also had the opportunity to experience Thai culture by participating in traditional festivals and events organized by PSU’s International Relations Office. One notable event was Loy Krathong, an annual Thai festival where people float small religious offerings (krathongs) on water. The celebration featured a lively parade with traditional Thai costumes, dance performances, and competitions such as runway and costume contests.

Reflecting on their internship, Fadilla and Priyo emphasized the importance of global exposure to new environments and languages. They improved their English communication skills through discussions with supervisors and labmates and gained experience in conducting well-structured research, from preparation to reporting. They concluded with an inspiring message: "We hope all students can do their best and take responsibility for their personal growth, even when facing challenges or moments of laziness. By preparing yourself in advance, you will be ready when opportunities arise."
