Muslim Middle Class and Halal Lifestyle in Indonesia : Highlights from the Final Day of the Online 2024 Summer Course

Yogyakarta, July 15th, 2024 - Today marks the final day of the 2024 Summer Course series, which was held online. The first session of the day began with exercise 4, themed “What are the difficulties in implementing a halal lifestyle in your home country and how to overcome them?” As usual, participants were divided into five groups. Guided by their respective group LOs, the participants were given time to discuss in their breakout rooms.

Under the mentorship of Sri Hidayati, M.Sc., participants were asked to present the results of their discussions on the challenges of implementing a halal lifestyle in their respective regions, as well as solutions to overcome these challenges. They raised issues regarding regulatory challenges, awareness and education, economic factors, supply chain issues, and cultural and social dynamics from various countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Yemen.

After lunch, the second session continued with the material: 'Acculturation of Halal Products - Muslim Middle Class and Halal Lifestyle in Indonesia', presented by Najib Kailani, S.Fil.I., M.A., Ph.D., and moderated by Aggesty Ika Nurlita, M.Si. He explained the process of adapting and integrating halal products into local culture and how the halal lifestyle trend is developing among the middle class.

"As we are talking about halal, we can't assume ourselves that it's not only about how this product is produced and circulated into the halal supply chain, but we also have to understand why people have to live in something called a Muslim community, understand why people choose halal traveling or halal tourism instead of secular destinations. This phenomenon must be understood as well," he explained.

This event concluded a series of insightful and inspiring activities, bringing valuable experiences to all involved. Stay tuned for further updates as we continue our exciting journey through the offline 2024 Summer Courses later.
