The Faculty of Science and Technology
(FST), UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta successfully organized an International
Workshop & Seminar Series entitled “On Halal Slaughter, Stunning, and
Animal Welfare” on Wednesday, 29 April 2026. The event was conducted in a
hybrid format and involved participants from Indonesia and various countries
abroad. This international seminar was organized collaboratively with the
Universitas Indonesia Halal Center and Kyushu International University, Japan,
as part of the faculty’s commitment to strengthening global academic
collaboration and discussing contemporary issues related to halal slaughter
practices and animal welfare.
In her welcoming remarks, Dean of the
Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof. Khurul Wardati, emphasized the
importance of the seminar as a platform for knowledge sharing and international
discussion regarding halal slaughter practices. She stated that the topic is
highly relevant in balancing the implementation of Islamic sharia principles in
animal slaughtering with the importance of maintaining animal welfare
standards.
The seminar The seminar was
moderated by Dr. rer. medic. Esti Wahyu Widowati, who successfully created an
engaging and interactive atmosphere throughout the session, with presented four distinguished speakers from different
countries and professional backgrounds. Lesley Moffat from the Netherlands,
founder of Eyes on Animals, shared perspectives on ethical animal
handling and welfare practices. Dr. Andrew Grist from the United Kingdom, Senior
Lecturer in Veterinary Public Health and Vice-President of the Association of
Meat Inspectors at the University of Bristol, discussed veterinary public
health aspects in slaughterhouse systems and meat inspection standards. Meanwhile,
Asalet Sancakdaroğlu from Turkey delivered insights regarding international
animal welfare monitoring and inspection practices. Representing Indonesia, Dr.
Isma Kurnianty from the Biology Study Program, Faculty of Science and
Technology UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, presented on fiqh perspectives on
halal slaughter implementation and scientific approaches related to animal
welfare.
The event was attended by
approximately 120 participants consisting of students, academics, researchers,
halal industry practitioners, and members of the public from various
institutions and countries. During the discussion session, participants
actively exchanged ideas concerning the integration of Islamic principles,
scientific approaches, and international standards in halal slaughter practices.
Through this activity, the Faculty of
Science and Technology UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta hopes to continue
promoting international academic engagement while contributing to the
development of ethical, sustainable, and halal-compliant food systems.
